Whale Sharks

Distributed throughout the tropics, whale sharks are rarely found in water less than 70 degrees Fahrenheit. This is a migratory species, with two distinct subpopulations: an Atlantic, and an Indo-Pacific which accounts for 75% of the entire whale shark population. While many seem to spend the majority of their time in the top 200 meters of the water column, they have been documented diving up to 6,325 feet deep. The largest living fish species, whale sharks are filter feeders who capture prey by holding their mouth open and funneling prey towards their filter pads. Spotted in appearance, whale sharks have unique spot patterns that can be used to distinguish between individuals.
