Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins
Five genetically distinct island resident populations of Hawaiian spinner dolphins are recognized. These groups rest along the shallow coastlines and white sandy bays of the islands during the day, venturing into deeper waters to feed at night. Spinner dolphins’ acrobatic tendencies earned them their common name, and they may spin up to seven times before falling back into the water. This behavior is believed to be used for acoustic signaling and communication but may also aid in removal of ectoparasites such as remoras. Females may give birth to one calf every three years on average, and calves are born at all times of the year, indicating no set breeding season. A populous species on the Kona Coast, the early morning hours are the best time of the day to see large groups nearshore.
