Mauna Loa Awakens!

Hawaii’s largest volcano, Mauna Loa, has awakened! Our Adventure Director, Kelsi Kauhane, left her house early this morning to record the glow of Mauna Loa’s eruption at sunrise!

After 38 years of silence, Mauna Loa has erupted! The last eruption occurred in 1984, and the volcano has been dormant ever since. According to local sources, Mauna Loa awoke at approximately 11:30 PM HST on Sunday 11/28. Our crew member, Kelsi, said she awoke to a series of small quakes that evening with no idea of what surprise the Big Island had in store! It’s not every day that we have the opportunity to experience such an incredibly historic and powerful natural phenomenon!

While we are enthusiastic about Hawaii’s oceans and marine life, we are equally passionate about the Big Island itself. As the youngest island in the Hawaiian Islands chain, it’s no surprise that the land is still actively changing and forming. This activity has not impacted or altered our tours in Kona, but we’re eager to continue observing the flows and course of direction in the days/weeks to follow. Mauna Loa’s glow can even be seen from our departure location in Honokohau Harbor, making for some captivating sights on our upcoming night manta snorkels! Now more than ever is an exciting time to experience what the Big Island is best known for… whales, mantas, and volcanoes!!
