Whale & Wildlife Report | September 10-16, 2023
Sperm whales, spinner dolphins, and rays! Our year-round dolphin and whale-watching trips are always exciting opportunities for awesome wildlife encounters!
In addition to seeing familiar faces like Hawaiian spinner dolphins, we had some more rare sightings this week! Outside the harbor, we spotted a trail of hihimanu, or spotted eagle rays! Their Hawaiian name, hihimanu, best translates to “elegant bird”, a fitting name for these majestic creatures.
We had an incredible encounter with a much larger species this week, sperm whales! Offshore in around 9000 ft of water, we encountered a pod of 10-15 sperm whales!! They exhibited lots of social behavior including head lunges and partial spy hops. Our crew spotted a few smaller whales in the mix and a potential calf. As one of the largest species of whales that we may encounter on the Kona Coast, everyone onboard this week was thrilled!
We’re looking forward to another great week and more wild encounters to come on our night manta and dolphin and whale watching trips!
