Whale & Wildlife Report | December 3-9, 2022

The mantas stole the show this week! Although the vog and Mauna Loa’s eruptions continue, we’re happy to report it hasn’t impacted our tours thus far! We had some pretty great weather conditions during our trips, making for some awesome encounters in the water with Kona’s mantas!

We had a blast showing our guests Kona’s resident rays. The ocean presents new opportunities every day, and the number of mantas we typically encounter is extremely variable. Makako Bay, the northern manta site, was a hotspot this week. We encountered 13-15 mantas on our mid-week trip and were able to ID mantas Gia, Mighty Q, Jana, Shea Ray, and Lafferty! Plankton levels were high and we got some great up close and personal looks at some familiar and unfamiliar faces.

With lots of mantas, humpback whales arriving, and so much excitement surrounding Mauna Loa, The Big Island is the place to be this December! We only have a few more snorkel tours until we shift into full-time humpback and manta mode. Stay tuned for more sightings and tour highlights from our upcoming trips!
