Whale & Wildlife Report | October 29 - November 4, 2023

The dolphin action was noteworthy with large pods of bottlenose, Hawaiian spinner dolphins, Pantropical spotted dolphins, and rough-toothed dolphins. Our encounter with the rough-toothed dolphins was especially exciting, and we watched as they chased mahi through the water and even displayed a mid-air catch! Captain Andrew caught this wild scene on film in the above photo!

The action didn’t stop there, we also encountered a number of whale species this week! A few of our tours enjoyed pods of pilot whales, a more frequent species on our tours. One group was spy hopping and displayed lots of surface-active behavior! Another group was especially curious and our crew was able to snap some more great photos! We also saw a pair of Cuvier’s beaked whales, who despite being a little shy, gave us some great looks and surfacings.

A week for sharks, we saw a number of species that call the area home! Oceanic whitetip sharks often trail pods of pilot whales, and we spotted multiple near the different groups. While searching near the fish farm, commotion from hunting dolphins resulted in a ton of shark activity. Olivia, our shark expert and enthusiast, spotted oceanic blacktips, Galapagos sharks, and sandbar sharks in the mix! Often times we see shark and dolphin action by the fish farm, but it was cool to see so many species appear at once!

We had a wildlife-packed week, and we can’t wait to explore more offshore. We’re looking forward to our whale watch and night manta tours this coming week!
