Whale & Wildlife Report | November 12-18, 2023

We had some awesome offshore encounters on our dolphin and whale-watching tours this week at VV buoy. One of our trips spotted a scalloped hammerhead shark, and on another adventure saw hunting rough-toothed dolphins chasing Mahi! The FADS are always a great spot to look for life, whether it’s a shark in the water or a brown booby perched above.

The dolphins were out and about along the coast! One of our trips encountered three different species (bottlenose, pantropical spotted, and rough-toothed) on their adventure. A few bottlenose dolphins even crashed the party on our night manta snorkel! A few zoomed around the site and swam right under our light board!! The group even escorted us from the site, riding our bow and wake as we made our way home. This had to be one of the most exciting manta trips of the season!

Our whale encounters this week were with short-finned pilot whales. This is the species of whale that, when it’s not humpback season, we probably encounter the most! The group of pilot whales was near the Kealakekua Bay area, and they did a few spy hops and seemed very interested in us. Almost all of our dolphin and whale encounters this week were in deeper waters, another testament to the magic of the pelagic zone!

We rounded off our week with a mega yacht sighting, something we do not see very often in Kona. The boat was called the “Anawa” and was equipped with a color-matched private helicopter that flew over us before landing on the ship. Attached to the side of the yacht was a smaller color-matched yacht, because you have to color-match everything right? Either way, it was a wild sight!
