Whale & Wildlife Report | March 2-8, 2025
March is here and so are the whales! With multiple humpback comp pods this week, some of our tours had awesome action. With all the surface activity, we typically spot these groups from a distance away. When on scene, we saw lots of lunges, trumpeting, and pec slaps! This week we even had one of our best trips of the season with nearly 45 min of repetitive breaching. So impressive! When we encountered whales with longer downtimes, we heard some equally astounding vocalizations through our hydrophone. Hearing the humpbacks sing is always a joy!
Our trips encountered mom, calf, and escort trios up and down the Kona Coast. A few of these trios were accompanied by bottlenose and Hawaiian spinner dolphins! It was so cool to see these species interacting. A couple calves also showed off their strength with cute breaches and playful behavior. With it being the final month of the humpback season, we were surprised to find a tiny calf this week. Its dorsal fin was still almost folded and floppy! We’re soaking up all the baby encounters that we can!
In addition to the sleepy spinners outside Honokohau Harbor, we found two massive pods. The largest had to be at least 200 or so! There’s nothing like being surrounded by dolphins jumping around us and riding our bow. With Kona’s clear waters, our guests got great views of them riding our bow and wake. We were treated to hunting and interactive bottlenose dolphins near the fish pens and one group further offshore that was cruising through the swells. It’s hard to beat spending a day on the water with these charming dolphins!
Our night manta tours ventured to the southern site this week. We enjoyed the beautiful sunset as our team and guests got ready! The water clarity was stellar allowing everyone super views of the mantas swooping below. We had pretty consistent action and lots of good barrel rolling right beneath our boards! The winter weather can be variable, but it’s always worth the wait to spend time with these gentle ocean giants. We’re looking forward to our upcoming manta trips this Tuesday and Friday!
