Whale & Wildlife Report | January 8-14, 2023

Our crew and guests had some exciting action off the Kona Coast this week! Breaching babies, hammerhead sharks, dolphins, and more! A bit of swell and drizzle was vastly overshadowed by some truly memorable trips on the water. One tour made headlines and our encounter was featured on Hawaii News Now!

The interaction we had was almost spiritual. On the 10th, our guests and crew had a magical encounter off of Makalawena Beach during one of our whale watch tours. After spotting a solo humpback and cruising alongside at around 200 yards, the whale made a sudden turn toward our boat. Engines shut off, the humpback spent the next 40 min doing what can be best described as people-watching. In front, behind, beside, and beneath… we found ourselves surrounded! Likely responding to the excitement of guests onboard, the whale spy hopped, slapped its pec fins, and repeatedly rolled at the surface. We were beyond ecstatic for such a special interaction, and we can easily say this was one of the best whale-watching experiences we’ve ever had!

Bouncing and breaching babies! The excitement continued with breaching baby humpbacks on multiple trips throughout the week. Breaching, although it happens every day, is the right place at the right time experience. We often see calves exhibiting social and spirited behavior, and we loved watching them play at the surface and leap out of the water! A few of our trips were fortunate to also witness breaching mature humpback whales, a truly magnificent sight as they launch out of the water. These breaches left our crew and guests jumping for joy!

We’re thrilled to spend our days on the water running tours and sharing Kona’s wildlife with our guests! We started and ended the week with hammerhead sharks, and had lots of whales and dolphins in between. While we can’t predict for certain what we’ll encounter, we can guarantee a unique adventure every time we leave the dock!
