Whale & Wildlife Report | January 22-28, 2023

Whale is the name and breaching was the game this past week! During our whale-watching tours, we often get the question “do whales breach?”. The answer is yes, every day! When, however, is up to the whales. We were fortunate to witness a lot of activity during our trips, including some amazing breaches! Check out the photo below from one of these exciting encounters!

We had some great sightings this week, from adorable mom and calf pairs to a juvenile socializing with a pod of pilot whales! You can read about our pilot whale encounter on our last blog and on Big Island Now! Part of what makes our whale-watching trips so exciting is the unpredictability. The Kona coast is booming with whales and wildlife, making the possibility of new and exciting encounters constant. Take our sighting on Wednesday for example… a breaching dwarf sperm whale! That’s a combo that would get any whale enthusiast excited!

We had guests from all around the globe this week. From San Francisco to Germany, the thrill of whale watching calls out to all! We saw lots of humpbacks on our trips, and sharing the magic of the migrating humpbacks is one of our favorite things to do! The breeding grounds of Hawaii are alive with action, and we’re seeing more and more mom and calf pairs as we get into the thick of the season. Baby humpbacks and active males… every tour was an amazing adventure from the moment we left the dock!

Credit must be given where credit is due, and our highlight of the week goes out to the amazing Hawaiian Spinner dolphins during a honeymoon private charter! Just after the sun rose over Hualalai, we encountered a pod of over 100 Hawaiian Spinners returning from their evening hunt. The group was jumping, spinning, and playing in the waves. We got some great looks and were able to spend over half an hour with them! The newlyweds and Hawaiian Spinner dolphins captured our hearts this week, and we’re looking forward to our upcoming private charters!
