Whale & Wildlife Report | March 31- April 5, 2025

April is here, spring has sprung, and it’s our year-round whale watching season! With a few of our crew off-island this week, we ran one trip but it was a doozy with some fantastic sightings. We spent time with two species of whales, dolphins, Hawaiian monk seals, and even a black-footed albatross (shoutout to our fellow bird lovers).

We say it all the time… we never know what cool species we will come across during our adventures. While cruising offshore our team spotted a more unusual sight, a beaked whale! After a couple surfacings, the whale took a deeper dive, but not before our guests got a couple looks. With 3-4 hrs on the search, we work to find as much unique wildlife as we can!

Although our focus has shifted to Kona’s year-round pelagic whales, everyone was thrilled to encounter a solo humpback whale! We came across this individual near Kua Bay, and they had some longer downtimes. We soon discovered why when we dropped the hydrophone and heard him singing! We didn’t want the soundtrack to end! After several respiration cycles and fluke dives we said aloha to this solo singer.

While searching inshore areas to the north, we were greeted by a nice pod of Hawaiian spinner dolphins. A few dolphins were showing off with multiple high jumps and spins that left us impressed. Near the fish pens we spotted hunting bottlenose dolphins and two Hawaiian monk seals lobbing at the surface. Our cherry on top of the trip was a big bird for Kona standards, a black-footed albatross who displayed their impressive wingspan. We had so many sightings on just one trip, and we can’t wait to ramp up with our returned crew and daily tours this week!
